Peoria Notre Dame has been picked to win the Mid-State 6 Conference by the Peoria Journal Star. Below is an excerpt from today’s boys soccer preview. 2009 records are in parentheses.
Mid-State 6 Conference Outlook
1. Notre Dame (23-3-1, 6-0-0)
All but three key players return from last year’s team that fell one victory short in its bid for a second straight Class 2A state title. With Journal Star POY Vince Cicciarelli and all-stater Cody Gilfillan providing one of the state’s best 1-2 punches on offense, a strong midfield, and almost the entire defensive unit back in place, the Irish are nationally ranked (No. 33 by ESPN RISE).
2. Richwoods (5-11-1, 4-2-0)
3. Central (1-11-0, 0-6-0)
4. Manual (no varsity team)
Gilfillan will join Bradley University next fall
Senior midfielder/forward Cody Gilfillan has verbally committed to play soccer at Bradley University. Gilfillan is Bradley’s first commit from the Class of 2011.
Gilfillan scored 27 goals and tallied 15 assists while earning first team all-area and all-state honors as a junior.
Bradley, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, finished last season with an overall record of 6-11-1 but has high hopes for 2010. The Braves return a strong core of players and also brought in a large and very talented group of incoming freshmen.
Gilfillan is Peoria Notre Dame’s second NCAA Division I commit from the Class of 2011. Senior forward Vince Cicciarelli verbally committed to the University of Notre Dame last month.
Peoria Notre Dame enters the fall season ranked #33 in the nation by ESPN RISE.
PND will have an early season test against #7 Christian Brothers, the defending Missouri State Champion, in St. Louis on September 3.
#26 Reitz Memorial (Evansville, Ind.) and #35 Marquette University (Milwaukee, Wis.) are part of PND’s bracket at the Gateway Classic on October 1-2 in O’Fallon. Marquette will also travel to Peoria on September 10-11 to play Hinsdale Central and Schaumburg in the Peoria Notre Dame Invitational.
PND defeated #21 Rockhurst Jesuit (Kansas City, Mo.) over the summer by a score of 2-1 to capture the StL Varsity Soccer Showcase title.
